My sister-in-law has a picture hanging in her room that she mod podged onto canvas and ever since I saw it I wanted to make one too since I thought hers looked so good!
It only took me a year to get around to making my own.
I used a white canvas that I already had and painted the edges black with two coats of regular tole paint.
After the paint had dried I used a small roller brush to paint a thin layer of mod lodge onto the canvas.
I had a 20"x 24"photo printed at Sams Club for $7 and laid it flat onto the canvas and let it dry.
I was a bit nervous to paint the mod podge directly onto the picture, but I wanted to protect the picture from finger prints and dust and stuff, so I painted a thin layer of mod podge over the whole photo and let it dry.
Here's what it looks like right now. I'll probably paint another layer of mod lodge over the whole thing just to be sure it's covered well, but I think it turned out pretty great for under 10 bucks! (The canvas was like $10 when I bought it 4 years ago... so the whole project actually cost closer to $20, I guess.)
Either way it's much cheaper than having a photo printed directly onto canvas.

That looks fabulous! You did a great job. Where are you hanging it?
Thanks Tasha! I sort of wish I had had either a smaller canvas or a larger photo so I could have stretched it to the edge, but oh well. Next time. I will probably hang it in the stairway leading downstairs. I need to get the kids' school pictures printed and then frame them so I can hang everything together.
